And she is at school... she did great. She was excited. She woke up early, ate breakfast (pancakes - her favorite, compliments of me), got dressed, and was ready.
Off we went.
By the time we got to the school, she was completely quiet. I think she got nervous. We went inside the school and the smile she had when she got up this morning was gone. She hardly spoke to anyone who talked to her. Everyone was making her feel welcome and good. Little girls complimented her on our outfit and her backpack. Yet, she barely acknowledged anyone. Even her teachers, who are fabulous, by the way, went on and on about how excited they were and how much fun they were going to have. Her teacher, Mrs. O. told her that her little girl had a pair of Lelli Kelly shoes just like Bailey's, but she didn't respond. The only thing she said was, "My milk money is in the pocket of my lunch box." It was mumbled and without Bailey's typical smile. That made me a little nervous. BUT... no tears. I smiled really big and told her how much fun she was going to have and told her that I'd see her in no time at all. She hugged me, but wouldn't really look at me, and found her seat. I think she was trying to fight back some tears... only because I think she knew she'd have fun, but she was still a little nervous. I remember being a little girl at a new school (it happened a lot because my dad was in the military until I was about 10). I remember that feeling exactly... knowing that I was going to be fine and enjoy it, but still feeling a little like crying because I was still a little nervous and still a little sad to be leaving my mom.
She'll be fine... I'm sure she is already having fun and she's only been there for a half hour or so. I can't wait to hear how she likes it... to hear all the stories... and to see her smile again. I know she'll come running out to the car this afternoon with so much to tell me about. :)
Until then... Jake and I are hanging out and watching a Batman cartoon for the gazillionth time. I have a dentist appointment this afternoon, and hopefully, hopefully, I'll get a call from the doctor's office about my gallbladder test.
Pictures of Bailey's first day coming soon... got to download them. :)

All things Jakey...

Because my mom keeps reminding me that I'm going to forget some of the funny things Jake says and does if I don't write them down, I thought it would be a good time to do a post on all things Jakey.
I like that... all things Jakey. We could totally name something that... like a clothing line... hmmm.... Don't steal it anyone. :)
I've never hidden the fact that Jake is a little OCD. He's actually a lot OCD about certain things... but one of the cutest is probably his problems with getting things on his hands and feet... like dirt. He makes us hold his Reese's cups for him because he doesn't like the chocolate on his fingers. But, the cutest thing, by far, is when we go to the pool and he takes his little flip flops to the edge of the pool. He then dips his feet into the water to rinse them off and then he slips his feet in his flops. I can't help but laugh at him each time. He never messes up and just puts them on. He ALWAYS rinses his feet off first. It's not like they get really dirty. He just wants them cleaner. lol. I can't help but love it.
He says a lot of really funny things, too. He loves to work Brad. I don't know how he learned it. I really and truly don't know. He just has this cool personality. He figured out that Brad really loves his truck. I don't know if it was because Jake loved it so much and they kept "arguing" about whose truck it was. But, one day, my parents asked Jake whose truck it was. He automatically said, "It's mommy's truck." He loved it. He loved it that we all cracked up and that Brad was so adamant that it was his truck. So, the truck is officially mine. Sorry, Brad. Jake's the boss. And I promise I never prompted him to say it was mine. I thought it was great that he called it his... it never occurred me to tell him to call it mine.
Of course, the funniest thing he has done recently happened yesterday. Many of you on Facebook have already read this, I am sure. I told him that we were going to the park, but that I had to put my makeup on first. Here's how it went:
"Jake - I'll be downstairs in a minute to go to the park. Just let me put on my makeup."
"OK, Mommy."
A few minutes later, Jake comes in and announces, "I'm ready. I got my makeup. I'm ready to go."
It took me a couple of seconds to realize what he said. He had gone to Bailey's room, found her makeup, and put pink lipstick all over his lips.
Bailey and I thought we would crack up. It was absolutely freaking adorable.
Now... Brad is planning all he can to take him to some boy stuff... you know... monster truck jam kind of stuff. :)
And, finally, one of my favorite things that Jake is saying now... "Maybe for Cwismas." Every toy that we look at and I say not today, he asks, "Maybe for Cwismas." :) It's only August and he's planning for Christmas. How adorable is that?
OK... enough for tonight. Got to get up early tomorrow. :)

'Twas the day before Kindergarten...

'Twas the day before Kindergarten and all through the house... you could hear my daughter saying, "I start school tomorrow." :)
That's pretty much all I have heard all day. We went to bed last night after our orientation. It took her an hour and a half to fall asleep. She kept asking me questions about waking up early. She wanted to make sure we wouldn't be late. She asked me repeatedly to wake her up early this morning (Tuesday) for practice. She just wanted to make sure she could do it. I, of course, argued that today would be our last day of sleeping in, so we should totally enjoy it. :) That was me being selfish, of course.
Orientation went well. It was chaotic to say the least, but overall, we were happy with how things went. Our overly-confident and excited daughter was very pleased with all that she saw, with the exception of the minimal amount of toys in the classroom. She was expecting something a little more like her preschool classroom at the Christian school she attended last year. We have explained that Kindergarten is less play and more work. She wasn't super-excited to hear that, but eventually, she came around to the idea that she will enjoy learning so much that she won't have time to miss toys.
And so, I woke up at 8 a.m. this morning to Bailey smiling in my face and saying, "I start school tomorrow. Would I have to be up earlier than this?" Yes, honey... you have to be school at 7:45.... please get in your bed and watch a cartoon or something. I want my last morning to sleep in to last a little longer. Please... please. :)
Sleeping in... not in the cards for me. But 8 a.m. isn't too bad, I suppose.
We spent all day today at the pool. It was HOT... and the pool will be closed until 4 p.m. from here on out, so we all wanted to take advantage. It was kind of sad to me that our summer of spending complete days at the pool has ended. I hope it's not the last summer that I can take advantage of this, but even if it is, that's OK. We really have enjoyed it. I know how lucky I am that we had this very carefree summer to enjoy together.
Bailey told everyone we saw at the pool that she was starting school tomorrow. She is completely psyched about it. And so did Jake... he also thinks he is starting school tomorrow. I don't know how we are going to handle that. I keep telling him that he is going to get to stay home with me and play. He just told me that I'm not fun... thanks, bud... I thought that wouldn't happen for a while. Before we went to bed, he was telling me that he was going to spend the day at his mimi and poppa's house tomorrow and while Bailey goes to school from here on out. Not sure where that came from either, but apparently it is much more fun than being at home with me. lol. I hate to tell him that we aren't driving 2 hours for him to stay with mimi and poppa each day... even if they didn't have jobs and would be at home, which isn't the case. :)
And so it all begins... the lunch box and backpack are ready to go. My camera battery is all charged up. The adorable outfit that Cilla bought for Bailey a few weeks ago is laying out in her room for her special day. I hope she will do as wonderfully as we expect. She is dying to ride the bus and has spent as much time as possible trying to convince me to let her ride the bus tomorrow. To and from school... she doesn't "need" me to walk her in. She keeps telling me she knows where she is going. I am so happy that she's so ready... but man, it would be a little nice to be needed for a moment. lol. Don't worry... Jake will be the kid crying and hanging on my leg. I'll be regretting ever wishing for something other than a child who can't wait to get to school.
Oh... and because I know you'll ask... I haven't heard from the doctor. The results have been sent to their office, so I should hear something tomorrow morning. If not... I might have a nervous breakdown. :)

No word from the doc yet... I will keep you posted.
But, in the meantime...
I have a little girl who has been ready for her Kindergarten orientation for two hours. She insisted that we not be late. It starts at 5. She was bathed and dressed by 3. She's ready... and telling me every time that the clock turns another minute later. We had to pick out an outfit that would be beautiful, in her words, because she might meet a cute boy. Yes... it has begun and I'm not looking forward to hearing about that. lol. She actually met a boy in her class when we went for the Kindergarten testing about a week ago. I asked her if she thought he was nice. Her response was that he was OK, but he wasn't cute, so he could not be her boyfriend. Poor kid. I hope she didn't tell him that. She probably did, though. It's something we are working on with Bailey (among other things)... learning when to shut up. She must be a lot like her dad (right, Brad?). She typically has good taste, though... I have to give her credit. She usually does pick out the cutest kid in the class. lol.
I'm excited that she's excited. Tonight should be a fun night for her... she'll get to see her classroom, meet some of her classmates, and take in all of her school supplies (I'm bringing in muscle-man Brad to carry it all)... :) Jake will be with us, so that could be really interesting... but good for him to see what's going on, too.
It will be fun for me, too. I have to admit that, while I'm kind of sad that she's growing up, I am also really excited about this phase of her life. It will be a lot of fun to participate in school activities and watch her learn all of the fun stuff kids learn (with the exception of the attitude that I am certain will happen very quickly with Bailey). I am looking forward to signing up for fun things, like hopefully the 5K they have each spring and the Walk your Child to School Day. I am not looking forward too much to the 4 day minimum of homework policy that the school has, but I suppose that all comes with the territory.
Jake is pretty excited about it all, too. I'm not sure that he's going to be OK when we take her on Wednesday. He thinks he is going, too. He has a backpack and a lunchbox, because you simply can't buy one for Bailey and not buy one for Jake. What a little heartbreaker he can be... He has told at least a half dozen people that he is going to a new school with his backpack. I can see us taking her now, with Jake and his backpack and lunchbox, too. Except, I'm not sure he'll be completely devastated when he gets to come home with his mommy. You just never know with him. But, most of the time, he still loves me and our home more than anything. Well, really, it's his home and his toys (especially when he has it all to himself). Who could blame him? The kid has it made.
So, our little journey begins... a new phase in our life... let's hope she loves it as much as she is planning to love it. :)

Gallbladder - Chapter Gazillion two

Well, the test made me sick. I guess that's a good thing, but won't know for sure until next week. :) It wasn't horrible though... just some pain in my side, dizziness, and nausea. Just another day in the life of my starving gallbladder. And I do mean starving... like seriously, I have never wanted a cheesy bowl of fettuccine alfredo with a side of cheeseburgers and fries so bad in my life. lol.
We'll see what they say about it on Monday or Tuesday, so again, the ever-impatient me must wait. Fingers crossed that they want to get this sucker out of me quickly. But not on Wednesday... that's Bailey's first day of school. :)
I got some other news, too, but it is all up in the air at this point. The blood work came back on my liver and it was fine. But, they did find some other interesting things. I can't remember all of the technical terms, as I was finding this all out on the phone (a good thing), but basically there's a possibility that I have some kind of rheumatological disorder. It looks like Sjogren's Syndrome, but the doctor wants me to come in and do a complete physical, as well as look at my blood work again. Basically, she doesn't want me to freak out and think I need to worry about it, but she does want us to be proactive about it. She made the statement that if it was something she was really worried that we needed to find out immediately, she would have had me in the office today. She said I could come back in after the gallbladder or next week, whatever I wanted to do. It could all just be part of the gallbladder throwing things off. Or it could be that I have this syndrome or Rheumatoid Arthritis. In any case, every option is something that has a treatment... not necessarily a cure, but a treatment that would allow me to continue living my life for a long time. Which is really ALL I care about.
I'm not freaking out... I'm really positive about it and think that this will all work out just fine, so please don't worry. I just wanted to let you guys know what's going on. We're going to get this gallbladder thing figured out and taken care of before we discuss anything else with the Sjogren's or Rheumatology. I want to take it one step at a time and deal with one thing before worrying about another. After I get the gallbladder squared away, I'll have a physical and go from there. So... the saga continues. :) But, this whole gallbladder could be a huge blessing in disguise. Apparently, Sjogren's can be very difficult to diagnose and she said that if it is indeed Sjogren's, we have caught it early because my levels were just barely positive.
In the meantime...
No running. And, I'm missing it like insanely crazy. That or just some form of physical activity. No... I really do miss running. It was a nice break from everything and it would be really nice to "escape" into something that I could actually accomplish in a 30-minute period. :)
And it's really hot here. Or it has been, which means I probably wouldn't have wanted to run anyway. I'm hoping tomorrow is slightly cooler... then we're hoping to spend some time at the lake and/or the pool. Just a few more days until school starts and no more pool. :( We have to take advantage while we can.
Thank you all so much for your sweet thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement... You guys totally rock. :)

Short post tonight... got to get in bed for my big test tomorrow. :)
No food or drink until after my test. Woo hoo. Thank God it's at 8 in the morning. :) Fingers crossed... hopefully I have a bad gallbladder? Is that even right? I guess that's the best thing to hope for here... so yep... send bad gallbladder vibes my way. If you've ever wanted to wish that I was sick or wish something bad on me (then why the heck are you reading this?), now is the time. I give you permission to hope I have a bad gallbladder and I get sick on the test tomorrow, just to show them that it is my gallbladder.
Will let you guys know how it goes tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers!

Random Acts of Kindness

I love this idea that my friend through blogging, Dawn, has come up with. I've made reference to Dawn on here a lot recently... we have lots in common and our blogs are often very similar. She started her life list shortly after I published mine and we have really had a lot of fun comparing notes and talking about all that we want out of life.
What I really loved about Dawn's list (and something I want to add more of to mine in the future) is that several of her items involved giving things to people anonymously. You can tell she put a lot of thought into making her list about helping others as much as helping herself.
She completed one of these list items by doing something as simple as paying for the breakfast of the person behind her in the McDonald's drive-thru the other morning. Her blog post about it reminded me of the many times that my younger brother, Cory, and I would make our parents stop at an intersection where a homeless man would be standing and we would give him some change or even a $5 bill. It felt good. We knew that he very well could waste it on cigarettes or booze, but we knew that it was the right thing to do. My parents would tell us that we were being generous and doing the right thing... if that person chose not to use it correctly, that would not be our fault.
Anyway... Dawn posted a blog this morning about a challenge that she has for everyone. She read an article (a must-read) about a project a lady started where she did random acts of kindness sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, for complete strangers. It's wonderful.
So, Dawn's challenge to anyone interested:
Starting today and going for one week, until next Thursday, August 12, I challenge you to two things:
(1) Do one random act of kindness. It can be whatever your heart desires.
(2) Forward this request to 5 of your friends and ask them to do it too.
After you have done your request, email me at randomacts365@gmail.com.
I would love to see that we are all making an effort to make the world a better place. Dawn will blog about all the wonderful things that were done after the August 12th date! Do it! :)

My post about yesterday:
You know me... I am not going to let someone else control the situation (yes, all doctor's offices surely hate me). I called around and found a place to do the HIDA scan tomorrow (Friday the 6th) instead. I was a little worried my doctor's office wouldn't appreciate this, but I explained to them that I just didn't want to be sick for another week and they were really nice about it.
They probably are sticking a little voodoo doll with pins as I write. lol
But, I'm more happy now. Except that I have to have the test at all. Not excited about it, but at least it won't be a week until I have it.
I'm so happy that I have such a wonderful mom and an awesome best friend to help me. My mom is going to watch the kids for me and Cilla and Brad are splitting up taking me and picking me up at the test. Thank you guys... you rock. :)
Mother freaking, curse word, curse word, expletive, expletive. :)
That's it.
No, seriously...
I went to the surgeon. He's not sure it's my gallbladder and wants to confirm before I have surgery.
I understand and appreciate that. I like thoroughness.
They want to do a HIDA scan.
Cool... not really. But, I'll pretend I'm cool with a test that must be so much fun they make sure you have someone to drive you home. Really cool. :( Someone I know that had one before said it made her really sick. Awesomeness.
Guess when they originally scheduled the test... Friday, the 13th. No, I'm not superstitious, at least not about the number 13 (it was a family football number for years).
But, I was not happy about waiting a week and a half to have a test done to see IF I should have a surgery. Then, waiting for the results. Then, waiting for the surgery. Then, waiting to recover. If I have the surgery at all.
What the heck? What if it isn't my gallbladder? Wouldn't it be nice to get that ruled out quickly so that I can start feeling better sooner? I don't want to wait a week and a half, have the test, find out it's not my gallbladder and then see that I have to go back to doctor's offices and start all over to figure out what the heck it is.
Is it really possible for me to be the only one that sees the problem here? In a building full of doctors???
Not happy.
Thank you guys... you rock. :)

List update...

Tonight is a list update.
I have no kids to write about tonight. They are living the good life, getting spoiled by their grandmother in eastern Kentucky. I'm sure they will be total brats by the time they get home. I dread that part. I miss the little birds... but when they come home, they act like the little prince and princess that they've been treated like at their mamaw's. :) But, they have fun... and they have rules that involve no more toys for a while, which is good. They did get a cat (that will stay at their mamaw's) and apparently it is all the rage. So much that my little man, who typically is ready to come home by now, wanted to stay one more night. It worked out nicely for me... since I have the appointment with the surgeon at 10:45 in the morning. Yippee.
So... back to the list.
I'm slightly disappointed... well, flat out disappointed, that I can't do Habitat for Humanity this weekend. We (being Brad, Cilla, Bret, Dawn, and Brandon) had planned this in June. All three of us ladies want to do this... as do the guys, I think... and it sucks that my gallbladder is preventing that. Boo. That's two list items that it has interfered with... camping and Habitat for Humanity. Have I mentioned how much I can't wait to get this gallbladder out and be done with this?
Anyway... I'm working on other things though.
Our garden... is growing. Some of it is dying, but lots of things are growing. Well, lots of tomatoes and peppers are growing. That's pretty much it. lol. The squash and zucchini must have had some infestation of insects or something, because it was growing great and then BAM! It all died. All of it. So did my baby watermelons! The plant is HUGE, but the watermelons that were growing turned completely black and shriveled up and died. I was not happy. The pumpkin plants are getting too hot and I don't think they're going to make it. That made me more sad than anything. I was so excited about seeing pumpkins growing this fall. My butternut squash, however, has done really well. There's one almost ready to pick. So... I'm learning. I know next year to spread things out more... I think the bell peppers would be bigger by now if I had put them in front of the tomatoes. The plants got too big and shaded the peppers too much. No habaneros next year... they are just going to rot away because no one knows what to do with them. lol. They are just too hot. And, hopefully my blackberry bush might come back next spring instead of completely dying. We'll just see. While I have lots more to learn in terms of gardening, I think it's safe to say that I can mark off my vegetable garden on the list. So... one more thing comes off the list! :)
Running. Well. I'm not running because of my health. Enough said. My goal right now is to get healthy and get over this surgery and everything and start training again. I was hopeful that I might be able to come back fast enough to run a 10K this fall, but I might just plan to skip the 10K altogether and just train for the half marathon in the spring. I don't know. I'll just have to see what happens.
I also have on my list some things about reading. I want to read Newsweek's Top 100 Books of All Time. Well, actually, I don't think I should have put that on the list, because there are a few on that list that I flat out do not want to read. So, I might just never accomplish this one. I actually might change it to something more like "read the books I want to read off of this list and create my own list of Top 100 Books." :) Until I make that executive decision to change it, I am reading some of the ones that are on this list that I actually do want to read. Today, I visited the library and picked up The Catcher in the Rye and Gulliver's Travels. I think it's quite funny that I never have read either of these two. I know the general synopsis of both and have heard references to them throughout life. I just never have read them. So... I'll let you know what I think about them. :)
Also, at the library, I picked up the second round of books to read to the kids, as part of the 50 Books To Read While In Kindergarten. We have marked off 6 from the list and I picked up 7 more today. I am surprised by how much the kids enjoyed it. Actually, I really expected Bailey to, but Jake shocked me. He doesn't typically like to read, unless it's about superheroes. But, he loved the books! He especially loved A Splendid Friend Indeed by Suzanne Bloom. Funny how certain things appeal to certain kids.
I'm still working on the list and have some additions and changes to make to it. I was planning to wait until my birthday to make some changes to it. But... I think I'm going to have to do it sooner. There's one thing that I was going to add that I am going to be able to accomplish in September (surprisingly), so I'm going to have to at least make that change. :) I'll let the curiosity drive you all nuts... except Cilla who I already told about it. :)

My Little Speaker

To distract myself from my growling stomach and my aching side and back, I am up sewing cornhole bags. Yippee. :) Actually, my sewing machine is embroidering cornhole bags, so I'm sitting on the computer, waiting for it to finish so that I can sew them.
Anyway... I thought I'd do a quick update, since I haven't already, about Jake's speech therapy.
I believe that the last time I posted anything about this we were still waiting to hear from the speech therapist. Sorry if I'm wrong and have posted more...
I talked to the speech therapist that did Jake's evaluation about a week after we went in. She reported that he was in need of therapy two times a week for 30 minutes each session. Nothing that she told me surprised me... we were very aware of the areas that he did well in and the areas he didn't do well in. The only real surprise in the conversation was the fact that she failed to check to see if he would qualify for anything through the school system. I had asked for her to let me know if he would qualify for Early Start or for the speech therapy component of the Early Start program. She didn't. When I asked why, her response was that they felt that one-on-one attention at their office was more beneficial. I think that they really thought the $80 out-of-pocket-after-insurance co-pay was more important. Sorry. I know business is business, but really? So, I called back to the Early Start office (we had already talked once and they weren't able to get him in to get evaluated until August). I talked to the lady in the office, who indicated that she thought if he qualified with one therapist, he'd qualify for another. So, we wait until they come back in to the office on Wednesday. We'll schedule an appointment at that time to see if he qualifies for Early Start or just for speech therapy or anything at all. For free. :)
Yes, God is teaching me patience this week. :) He's trying to at least... I'm not a very good student. :)
I love my baby boy... he's going to be a fine speaker one day... I just know it. :)
